It is about 66 km from Rijeka. From Zagreb the road is 162 km, which is roughly 1 hour 56 minutes by car, and from Zadar 174 km, roughly 2 hours 4 minutes (<a href=\"https:\/\/daytrip.com\/en\/transfers\/senj-hr\">Daytrip<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The town connects to the interior through the Vratnik Pass (at 700 m), with Rijeka to the west and Zadar and Dalmatia to the south (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lika-destination.hr\/ld-area\/croatia\/292\/senj\">Lika Destination<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>A three-thousand-year-old town<\/h2>\n<p>Senj has Roman roots; at the time its name was Senia (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senj\">Wikipedia<\/a>). According to a local interview, the settlement is roughly three thousand years old (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiaweek.com\/hear-it-from-locals-croatian-town-of-senj\/\">Croatia Week<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The town&#8217;s symbol is Nehaj Fortress, completed in 1558. The Uskoks, Christians who had fled the Ottomans, lived here and in the fortress. Venice accused them of piracy, and after the Uskok War, following the 1617 truce, they were deported (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senj\">Wikipedia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>What to see<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nehaj Fortress:<\/strong> a 16th-century fortress towering over the town. Every year, battles of the 16th century are re-enacted here during the Uskok Days (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiaweek.com\/hear-it-from-locals-croatian-town-of-senj\/\">Croatia Week<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Senj City Museum:<\/strong> housed in the Gothic and Renaissance Vukasovi\u0107 Palace, with coins and weapons in its collection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiaweek.com\/hear-it-from-locals-croatian-town-of-senj\/\">Croatia Week<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cathedral of St Mary:<\/strong> an 11th-century church whose treasury and library can also be visited (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiaweek.com\/hear-it-from-locals-croatian-town-of-senj\/\">Croatia Week<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Events:<\/strong> winter and summer (August) carnivals, Uskok Days, Klapa Festival, Samba Festival (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lika-destination.hr\/ld-area\/croatia\/292\/senj\">Lika Destination<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horvatingatlanok.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/velebit-hegylanc.jpg\" alt=\"Mountain range with trees in the foreground\" class=\"wp-image-169081\"\/><figcaption>Photo: Kristina Kutle\u0161a \/ Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The surroundings<\/h2>\n<p>The area around Senj is protected by Velebit Nature Park and Northern Velebit National Park, the latter being the youngest of the Croatian national parks. The area offers hiking trails, cycling routes, rock climbing, cave tours and, in winter, snowy slopes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lika-destination.hr\/ld-area\/croatia\/292\/senj\">Lika Destination<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The island of Krk is about 10 km from Senj across the sea, and according to a local interview boat trips run there (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiaweek.com\/hear-it-from-locals-croatian-town-of-senj\/\">Croatia Week<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Climate and wind<\/h2>\n<p>Senj has a mild climate: the winters are windy, and the summer is relatively dry and warm. Depending on the source, the number of sunshine hours per year is roughly between 2,250 and 2,340 (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senj\">Wikipedia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lika-destination.hr\/ld-area\/croatia\/292\/senj\">Lika Destination<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The town is very windy, and the region is also known for its strong bora storms (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lika-destination.hr\/ld-area\/croatia\/292\/senj\">Lika Destination<\/a>). The bora is a wind that blows from the mountains towards the sea.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ), wind gusts in Senj are stronger than in Rijeka and come mainly from a north-easterly to easterly direction. On two earlier occasions they rose above 150 km\/h: the measured value was 153.7 km\/h on 17 February 2016 and 157.7 km\/h on 25 January 2017 (<a href=\"https:\/\/meteo.hr\/objave_najave_natjecaji.php?section=onn&amp;param=objave&amp;el=zanimljivosti&amp;daj=zn17042026\">DHMZ<\/a>). The population peaked in 1910, when 16,713 people lived here, and has been declining since. The main sectors of today&#8217;s town are fishing, shipping and tourism (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senj\">Wikipedia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Property in Senj<\/h2>\n<p>Our portfolio includes an apartment house in Senj: four apartments and two units consisting only of a room, six rentable units in total.
